The Edwardians had Cosmetic Surgery & it Wasn't Dissimilar to Today
đ„Hot Off The Press
âOne of the biggest thrills of the research process is finding the most unexpected tidbit of information that sends me spiralling down a wild rabbit hole. Ultimately I crawl out the other side mildly delirious and covered in brambles but with a wealth of new (extremely niche) knowledge.
This is precisely what happened leading up to this video: whilst doing some research for the Victorian Skincare video a while back, I came across a brief chapter in one of my sources entitled âPlastic Surgeryââand absolutely had to know more. As far as I was aware, elective surgeries in this time before reliable anaesthesia and antibiotics was a Big No for being entirely more dangerous than it was worth. It turns outâŠthat wasnât exactly the case. And where the subject of historical cosmetic surgeries is occasionally brought up nowadays, itâs almost ubiquitously assumed that these procedures were done for reconstructiveânot cosmeticâpurposes. The primary evidence says otherwise!
This was also the perfect video to put into production this month, with the planned content schedule greatly impacted by the WGA and SAG/AFTRA strikes. SAG/AFTRA guidelines have advised online creators to refrain from social media promotion or mention of any media produced by struck companies in an effort to prevent them from seeking promotional labor beyond striking performers. All for good reason: I am very lucky to be working as an independent publisher at the moment and not at the behest of a large studio, but many of my fellow artists donât have that privilege. The sooner we can get them the wages and securities they deserve, the better for us all: artists and audience alike. I hope youâll bear with us in the meanwhile!â

đ„ WGA, SAG/AFTRA STRIKE UPDATE

Weâve been busy reworking the content strategy for this month to align with the WGA and SAG/AFTRAâs strike guidelines. Scripts are being rewritten to eliminate struck media references where possible, and projects where this content is unavoidable will be held until the studios reach an agreement with workers.
While we have some peak shenanigans being fast tracked into production, it may take some time for these to filter through to publishable status. Heads up: August content might be a bit sporadic while we adjust.
CONTENT AFFECTED
RESEARCH & EXPERIMENT VIDEOS: largely unaffected; any media references will be cut and projects released as normal.
SEWING VIDEOS: moderately affected; we rely on the searchability of popular media and characters for distribution as well as to inform the artistic themes of the story, so projects will be fairly small or generically themed for now. Projects which would suffer artistically for changes will be held. Components of larger character-focused projects will be released independently without media affiliation.
COSTUME REVIEWS: largely affected. All projects currently in progress are connected with struck media and have been put on hold.
Sincerest apologies if any of your favorite types of video are affected; rest assured: as several of these are already in production, theyâll be ready for release as soon as an agreement is reached.
