Let's explore some Fancy Victorian Menswear (Ft. Heathcliff)

One of my favourite parts of this job is undoubtedly the fact that I get to meet and work with so many amazingly talented people. So imagine my pleasant surprise when I learned that Heathcliff, my research assistant of two years now, is actually a remarkable seamster themself!

An idea immediately jumped into my head: people are always asking for more sewing videos on the channel—far more frequently than I’m capable of producing them myself whilst keeping up with my other professional demands. Wouldn’t it be neat to give Heathcliff an independent project and to allow the channel to explore dress history from a perspective outside of my own?

As is the way of things sometimes, though, things don’t always go to plan. The SAG/AFTRA strike, which we were confidently hoping would be over by the end of October, was creeping ever closer to November. And the video we had slated for the first November spot included struck media references. So Heathcliff was on the spot a bit earlier than expected, and much of the post-production work for this video had to happen whilst I was off in New York on a long-overdue visit home. Not the way I would have liked to introduce Heathcliff to front-of-camera life, but they handled it like a pro and I’m very proud to be able to publish this final piece.

The AMPTP did, after all, make an agreeable deal with SAG/AFTRA—the day that the video was due in for review! While I’m glad we didn’t take the gamble and go ahead with the originally-planned video, I’m glad that we can now proceed safely with regularly scheduled content. We have lots of exciting things to share! But most of all, I’m super proud of us all—my amazing team, and of course all you stalwart viewers—for sticking to strike guidelines with me no matter the chaos it caused. Our SAG/AFTRA siblings finally got the contract improvements they deserve, and hopefully helped to set a precedent for workers in all fields going forward.

See you soon!
