How the Victorians Faked Tiny Waists (without fainting!)
“Sometimes a video requires months of research, weeks of writing, and days of filming. Video ideas sit in the queue for weeks or months on end as previous videos filter through the production pipeline, waiting their turn to begin the process.
And other times…one simply reads a single comment in the wee hours of the night and a whole video springs into being in the span of a week.
Such is the nature of the video topics which dare to fly too close to the inferno of my Rant Zone. This, as you might expect, is one of those videos.
The realization did occur to me, though, that despite my having spoken in bits and pieces about the ingenious trickeries of the Victorian silhouette in previous videos, there wasn’t a single, easily-findable video with this information cohesively gathered in one place. Much of this might already be familiar to those of you who have spent some time around these parts, but I hope that this will prove useful to anyone currently journeying down the dress history path: to get us thinking critically about what we’re seeing when we look at photographs and paintings of past times, and to realize that things aren’t always as we might perceive them to be.
(Props of course to Editor Danny and Research Assistant Heathcliff for whom the editing, image-sourcing and citation-ing processes are the same regardless of how easily the video initially comes to life!)”
